Core Canine and Feline Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an important part of a dog or cat’s basic health care. They safeguard against a variety of fatal illnesses and diseases. Puppies and kittens require a round of shots during the first several months of their lives, then certain vaccinations annually or every three years depending on your pet’s circumstances. If you live in Manhattan -- whether the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Chelsea, the West or East Village, or wherever on Manhattan island -- City Pets The House Call Vets can provide an in-home pet visit to help keep your pets properly vaccinated and protected.

Core Vaccinations

Core vaccinations are a group of vaccines that are recommended for all pets, regardless of age, location and medical history. The schedule of vaccinations will depend on your pet. Typically, puppies and kittens begin receiving their vaccinations in a house call when between six to eight weeks of age. Shots are given at three- to four-week intervals until your pet reaches 16 weeks old. All of these shots can be administered during an at-home veterinary exam.

Recommended Core Puppy Shot Schedule

  • 6 to 8 weeks – Bordetella, distemper, measles, parainfluenza
  • 10 to 12 weeks – DHHP, coronavirus, leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease
  • 12 to 24 weeks – Rabies
  • 14 to 16 weeks – DHPP, coronavirus, leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease
  • 12 to 16 months – Rabies, DHPP, coronavirus, leptospirosis, Bordetella, Lyme disease

Recommended Core Kitten Shot Schedule

  • 6 to 8 weeks – Rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, chlamydia
  • 12 weeks - Rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, leukemia
  • 12 to 24 weeks – Leukemia, rabies

When to Booster Vaccines and Administer Other Vaccines

Boosters for cats and dogs depend on the environment and age of the pet. It’s best to talk to a City Pets veterinarian to create a schedule that is best-suited to your particular pet. During his or her at-home vet exam, the City Pets veterinarian can discuss your pet's medical history, lifestyle and needs to determine the best and healthiest course of action, including other vaccinations that might be relevant, for example, to where your pet lives.
